the friend i never met

I recently saw the video below on a fellow artist’s blog, and after watching it I instantly felt compelled to post it. It’s so well done, so powerfully poignant, and so very important. After I viewed it, I was swept away with thoughts of Laura.

Laura is the friend I never met. She was a dear friend of one of my most cherished soul sisters…Lauren. Lauren is a 28 year old amazing woman who has the spirit of a sage. She has deeply touched my life in an unexplainable unique way that has magically filled the tiny corners of my heart.

Laura was an important part of Lauren’s life…..which is why I feel a kindred connection to her also. I wish I could have met Laura, however she died October 24, 2010 from malignant melanoma, she was only 36 years old. Here are a few photos of Laura taken a few months before she passed away. These beautiful photos were taken by Lauren who truly captured her dear friend’s essence with a lens. To see more photos and read about their friendship go to Lauren’s blog.

We tend to think bad things happen to other people…….unfortunately this isn’t true. Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease was my wake up call. Seeing a beautiful woman like Laura leave the planet way too early is an enormous reminder that life is a priceless and precious journey that should be cherished and valued.

When I look into Laura’s dancing eyes I’m reminded not to sleepwalk thru my own life. I’m reminded to tell others I’m glad they were born, that they make a difference in my life. I’m reminded to hold a hug a few seconds longer, to feel the cool breeze on my face, to watch the sun go down till it disappears. In an unexpected upside-down way Laura’s death has made me feel more alive, more plugged in. I think Laura would like knowing she’s had this impact on my life, that she unknowingly has taught me about the meaning of grace. Laura is my friend…the friend I never met.

A Star is Born

“Starshine” had her first gig this weekend, a street faire in Sutter Creek. With the help of my bestest pals I survived a 4:00 a.m wake-up call, frozen fingers, car sickness, and was able to sell $200 in raffle tickets. We have now raised close to a $1000 for Parkinson’s research! We are going strong and have more events coming up.

Starshine and I will be at The Wine Stroll in Stockton’s Lincoln Center Shopping Center on June 17 between 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Raffle tickets will be on sale and I will be painting live…come out and say hi! We are then scheduled to be at The Lodi Theater on June 26 for the opening day of Cars 2. On July 5, we will both be at the proACTIVE parkinson’s project support group meeting in San Andreas at the library from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. We will be talking about the healing power of art and how to stay positive when life hands you lemons.

The winning ticket for “Starshine” will be drawn on July 15.Good Luck!

Major thanks to my dear friends who have jumped in to help with the Pedaling for Parkinson’s project, and also a special thanks to all of you for your kindness and generosity! We are a step closer to finding a cure for Parkinson’s Disease because of you.

Starshine Meets PI

Yesterday my dear friend Lauren and I made a trip to the Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale, and we brought along “Starshine” the groovy beach cruiser bicycle. When we wheeled this cool ride into the building, everyone’s eyes lit up and a small group soon gathered.

We made a few pit stops on our way home which included P.F. Changs for lunch (yummy mu-shu chicken with fresh lettuce wraps), two or three thrift stores, Borders bookstore, an awesome produce market,  and an craft store that rocked (Richards in Livermore). We left the house at 6:00 a.m and didn’t get back back home till 7:30 p.m.! I was pooped and happy at the same time. It was a soulful and fun-filled day!

Highlights of this day include melting our mascara while cracking ourselves up on the way home, having a heart to heart that touched my spirit, and be-bopping to disco tunes while shopping at Goodwil.

Here are a few pics of  my magical day~

My Camper Studio

I’m crazy in love with camper…especially vintage ones. Since it’s pretty unlikely that I’ll ever own my own trailer, I decided to transform my art studio into a pretend camper! It’s still a work in progress, which will eventually include a bedside window with a lake view, and a driver’s window (where my desk sits) that faces a winding road, complete with windshield wipers and a rear view mirror.

Here are a few shots of “The Camper” art studio~

Here's the kitchen, complete with Mike and a microwave!

My art table is located in the pretend "bathroom" area. See the bathroom sink near the "real" window?

I jazzed up the kitchen cabi with hearts.

A Scrabble board under plexiglass for break-time fun.

Silliness on the wall :)

1950's jewelry box is perfect for storing art supplies.

Mason jars, clay pots, and an old wooden box adds fun to the art table.

Sentimental Sundries.

Popcorn anyone?

Yahoo, a trailer banner!

A smart rolling pin.

The kitchen window looks out to pine trees and the "Starlite Classic Campground" sign.

Cozy bed for mid-day naps and overnight campers.

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

Big News! Starshine the PD Beach Cruiser is finished! This one-of-a-kind hand painted bike is scheduled to be raffled off on July 5th (yes folks, the date has been pushed back just a tad), she took a bit longer to paint than I had anticipated. A few awesome friends (friends = four rockin’ indispensible extra nice dear souls) helped save the day! All profits will be donated to my two favorite organizations:  The Parkinson’s Institute  and The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, both are dedicated to helping improve the lives of Parkinson’s patients and their families.

I sketched the design on the bike a few weeks ago, however filling in the lines with color has been a bit slow going for me. Some talented friends offered up their services and helped me finish the job!  Here are my art elf assistants~

Two of my bestest pals, Rocky and Lauren. THANKS guys, don't know what I would do without you!

My daughter's best friend Taylor. Thanks Tay, you ROCK!

This lovely lass is my daughter Emma Rose. Thanks baby girl for helping out!

All four of these gifted peeps added a steady hand in applying the wild colors used on Starshine’s frame and fenders. Pedaling for Parkinson’s has turned into a joint effort thanks to these wonderful souls.

The raffle is currently going strong and Starshine is ready to go on tour! She is scheduled to visit the following places:

1) Monday is a trip to The Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale. My amazing doc and her stellar staff will be properly introduced to this groovy bike . Half of all raffle ticket sales will be donated to this wonderful place. Everyone at P.I. tirelessly works at improving the lives of people affected by Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders. This 66,000+ sq.ft. facility houses an extensive research center and complete medical clinic that treats hundreds of patients each year.

2) Starshine’s next stop is a fun event located in Sutter Creek called “Trash to Treasures”. I will be selling my artwork, as well as raffle tickets. Starshine will be hanging out too, so if you’re in the area be sure to stop by and say hi to both of us on Saturday May 28 between 8:oo a.m.to 3:00 p.m.

3) Then she’s off to Robby’s Bicycles located in Stockton! The store manager, Danny Morris, kindly donated the beautiful white beach cruiser bike to the Pedaling for Parkinson’s program. He’s made the fundraiser possible and is truly the hero in this story. Thanks again Danny for your generosity and good will! Starshine will stay at Robby’s Bicycles for a bit so she can hang out with some other spectacular bikes! Be sure to stop by and see what’s happening in this way cool bike shop!

4) If you’re near the beautiful Lincoln Center  in downtown Stockton on June 17th between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m,. stop by the Wine Stroll! Starshine and I will have an artsy booth set up featuring some whimsical artwork, and I will also be painting live, so you can see me in action!

4) On Saturday July 2nd “Starshine” is off to the movies! Her and I will have a Pedaling for Parkinson’s booth set up in the lobby of Lodi Stadium 12 Cinema. The two of us will be there from 12 to 8 p.m. selling raffle tickets, and answering questions regarding Parkinson’s Disease. Be sure to come by!

5) Three days later on July 5, I will be speaking at the proACTIVE parkinson’s project, a support group located in Calaveras county. I’ll be sharing my journey with Parkinson’s Disease and the key to staying hopeful and positive when faced with an incurable disease. Of course “Starshine” will be with me and raffle tickets will still be available. This will be your last chance to win this fun bike, the lucky winner will be selected from the ticket barrel at the end of the meeting! WoO wHo!!!

An Earth Angel

You have probably heard me say this before, the best part of being an artist is meeting awesome people. One of my favorite peeps is a wonderful woman named Shery. I met Shery over a year ago when she contacted me with questions regarding commissioned artwork. I ended up painting an acrylic “princess” piece of her two adorable granddaughters.

When Shery and I first chatted on the phone, I instantly knew she was a cool chickie. I feel blessed to have a friendship with such a kind-hearted woman, a dear soul who walks the planet with grace and light.

Today Shery and I had lunch at a wonderful Greek eatery in Stockton call Papapavlo’s. We both got talking so much, I totally forgot to take a few shots of our yummy lunch. Shery had stuffed grape leaves, otherwise known as domas, and I had a delicious Greek salad topped with grilled Mahi Mahi…totally yummy! Here are a few pics of our fun lunch together~

Lodi Street Faire

I showed you guys the creepy side of Lodi Street Fair, but I have yet to show you a few of the magical things I saw. She here goes…”the non-creepy” side of the day~

Real Live Pretty Girls

Over the weekend I shot some photos of my daughter and her two friends Taylor and Savannah. I absolutely adore these 16 year old girls! They are bright, full of life, and hilarious. The wonderful thing is, they are just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. All three have hearts made of pure 24k gold.

The first girlie in the video is Emma, my awesome kid, the second beauty is Savannah, and the third charmer is Taylor. I was so happy when I downloaded these pics, because they somehow captured the essence of each girl. You can see the beauty balanced by strength in all three of them, which truly warmed my heart. If this is a glimpse of our future, we have nothing to worry about…..

An Artsy Chick’s Thought For The Day

Develop a spirit that can spy hope in the midst of darkness.

Art Studio Adventures

Me and my sympatico art-addicted friend Lauren, held up in my art studio for two days straight. We stayed up way too late, ate multi-colored popsicles, grooved to Adele tunes, and made some very cool artsy things! We did stop periodically for Skinny Lattes, grilled cheese sammies, dog wrestling, fresh air breaks on the swinging lounger, and of course pit stops to the potty.

OMG! I fell in love with this piece! Lauren’s magic photos placed on a large wood canvas, and then glazed with beeswax. Created a dreamy piece of soulful art. sigh…

You can see more of Lauren's work at theurbanhippie.wordpress.com. She will soon have an online store where you can purchase her magic photo canvas' as well as photo jewelry. Happy, colorful, make you feel good treasures!!

Look how cute it looks in my studio!! Love it! She wanted to leave it on my wall, but I told her we would make a second one for me!

We also worked with resin…a bit frustrating because it seems to have a mind of its own. Check out some of Lauren’s fun pics of our crafty 48 hour art marathon!

Mikey likes hangin' with the girls.

Best seat in the house.

Michael J. Fox...Mikey for short.
